how to live a good life
this spinoff post resonates very much and I really appreciate the beautiful and compassionate answer.
it explores something that has come up for me ... forever really but especially since autism diagnosis, and then I looked at it when exploring my research question for masters, and especially again since my concussion.
it comes back to meaning and purpose, measures of success and who gets to define that. it's important we do that for ourselves, whether in business or as individuals, rather than letting others define it.
Having a clear understanding of purpose is good but also can be tricky when applied to a life because it can get in the way of enjoying simple things, or living a "small life".
I remember saying to a friend something about 'learning to accept my weird little life' and his response was "I don't think your life is small". Which was kind. It reminded me of that parable about the stones and sand and beer in a jar.
My life has become quite small, far more so since that day. I've stepped away from the volunteering I was doing, most of my hobbies, and then more recently my job. But it's also necessary right now as I heal, and learn to calibrate, make choices, and put myself first.
I started gaming again over summer, discovering the massive world of baldur's gate 3. Obsessive screen time isn't great for the concussion but it gave me a language about main quest and side quests, and the complexity of choice in a non-linear world. On occasion things are wrong and I reload, try another way but for the most part it's just a case of picking a path; meandering through the world and meeting scenarios as they arise.
I'm starting to take delight in the way that metaphors- particularly those from technology - help me understand the world and how I function in it, rather than judging myself for not just picking it up or responding to the language that works for others. That there isn't a one correct thing I'm trying to discover, not everything needs to have a big p purpose, sometimes it's more about the process of choice, and sometimes we just do things for no reason at all.
All of this is helping inform the purpose and principles for this business, how it can contribute to my life rather than overwhelm and drain me, and gain better perspective on the value I can add in organisations. How we work is the work.
